Melissa Aliotti has been a civil litigation lawyer her entire legal career.  She and Michael Read formed Read & Aliotti, PC in 1997.  She has litigated hundreds of cases, trying many cases to verdict involving construction defects and construction site injuries, landlord tenant mold bodily injury, accidents with injuries from minor soft tissue to brain injury, and assault and battery cases with psychiatric component.  She has also argued before the 3rd District Court of Appeal.

She serves on the arbitration, dispute resolution, and judge pro tem panels for Sacramento and El Dorado counties, and is currently building her Special Master and Mediator practice.  She has presented at numerous educational seminars on alternative dispute resolution, personal injury, uninsured motorist law, liens, the special master process, insurance coverage, and construction defects litigation. In addition to her neutral's practice, she is legal counsel to contractor clients in construction defects, mold and personal injury cases, and in business management, insurance coverage, and risk containment matters

She served for six years on the Board of Directors of the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada, where she chaired the Construction Law, Education, and Insurance Liaison committees, and received the 2011 President's Award for her service. She is a member of the California State Bar litigation and small firm sections, the ABA (insurance, construction, and litigation sections), and the Defense Research Institute (construction section).

Born in Tokyo and raised in the military, Melissa spent her younger years in Europe, Washington DC, Monterey, and San Diego. She now makes her home in Sacramento with her husband and two daughters.  She is an enthusiastic supporter of the performing arts in the Sacramento region.

Defeating the adversary is the goal when disputes first arise. However, litigants soon recognize that prevailing in litigation requires great personal and financial investment, some or all of which may never be recovered. These real burdens often lead to the exploration of alternative dispute resolution.

Recognizing that the best result is often achieved through agreement, Ms. Aliotti has volunteered as an arbitrator, mediator, and settlement judge for local courts since the late 1990's. She has also served as a privately-hired mediator and arbitrator since 2000. Through the combined efforts of the parties and counsel with whom she has worked in this capacity, she has facilitated the settlement of nearly 100 cases. In furtherance of her commitment to helping parties find the most satisfying resolution to their problems, in 2010 she participated in post-graduate training in Advanced Mediation through the world-recognized Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, Pepperdine University School of Law.
