International Arbitration Partners Join Firm of K&L Gates

Wednesday, November, 23, 2016

Recently, two international arbitration partners from Cozen O’Connor joined K&L Gates.  They opted for a larger global platform, which allows K&L to fill in a gap in its international arbitration practice. According to a release from K&L in New York, attorneys Martin F. Gusy and Matthew J. Weldon will be joining the firm.

Prior to joining the arbitration group at K&L, Gusy chaired the international arbitration group at Cozen O’Conner.  He and Weldon have practiced together for six years, three of which were at Cozen O’Connor, where their practice grew to the point of wanting to move to a global firm.

One of the greatest areas of growth concerned matters throughout South America and Asia.  According to Weldon, he will now split his time between New York and Singapore, and spend time in London.

This is a lateral move.  It fills a void for the partners looking for a global market for their arbitration services, and the new firm, which wanted to institute an international arbitration arm.  According to a representative from K&L, “To have a major commercial center like New York and not have a real international arbitration practice here I think, was a shortcoming.” He further pointed out the major centers for arbitration in the world are in London, New York, Singapore and Brussels, and now K&L has a presence in those places.

Gusy explains, “It’s always to the client’s benefit to have attorneys involved at the places of arbitration or even licensed to practice in the jurisdiction whose laws are applicable.”
